Mental Health Support in Canada: Urban vs Rural

This report aims to highlight differences in key factors of urban and rural Canadians' mental health and discuss important barriers to receiving mental health support.

Key findings:

  • Since the beginning of the pandemic, rural individuals continue to be less likely to receive mental health support, reporting a 2.8% gap in access to mental health support for urban vs rural respondents in the year prior to the pandemic.

  • Urban individuals go online for mental health support (35.3%) and Rural individuals continued to receive mental health care from a family doctor (43.9%)

  • Since COVID-19 it's much less common to see a mental health professional in person. Urban communities reported a 39% decrease in these visits, suggesting more people are searching for replacement alternatives than their rural counterparts (37.6% decrease).
