Andrew (Andy) Greenshaw is a Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at the University of Alberta. He had trained in Europe and Canada, and then accepted a faculty position at the University of Alberta in 1986. He began as an Assistant Professor and Heritage Medical Research Scholar, became a Full Professor in 1996 and served as Associate Vice President (Research) from 2003 to 2010.
Dr. Greenshaw is also Scientific Director of the APEC Digital Hub for Best Practices in Mental Health, and is in the Leadership Council of the e-Mental Health International Collaborative (eMHIC).
He was also a director of the Alberta-based node of the national Canadian Depression and Research Intervention Network (CDRIN), which focuses on engaging people with lived experience of mental disorders as partners in patient-oriented research, and a member of the CDRIN Board.
He is a Fellow of the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CCNP), serving as President from 2000-2002; a Fellow of the Collegium Internationale Neuropsychopharmacologium (CINP); and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Dr. Greenshaw has served on a number of national and international boards including the Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation, Institute of Health Economics, and University of the Arctic, and is Chair of the Board of Our House, in Edmonton. From 2006 to 2015, he served as Co-Chair of the Alberta Addictions and Mental Health Research Partnership Committee.
He has also served on numerous Canadian Medical Research Council and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) grant panels for 30 years. He was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the CIHR Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction from 2012 to 2016; and a member or the Scientific Advisory Board of The Royal’s Institute of Mental Health Research in Ottawa until 2017.
Dr. Greenshaw is a member the Research Advisory Board for Little Warriors, a national organization committed to the awareness, prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse; and serves on the Board of Our House, in Edmonton, a long-term residential treatment centre for men in recovery from addiction. He is also a member of CIHR-funded multiple indigenous mental health networks in Canada.
He has broad interests in biological and psychosocial areas in biological psychiatry and behavioural neuroscience, and his research focus includes the application of machine-learning and data-mining to predict differential diagnosis and treatment responses in mental disorders.
He is part of a collaborative computational psychiatry group that includes researchers from the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute and the IBM Centre for Advanced Study at the University of Alberta; the IBM Thomas J. Watson Center in New York; the West China Hospital, Sichuan University in Chengdu, China; and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore, India.
