“The mental health specialist proved instrumental in my journey. Understanding my concerns about medication, he provided me with coping tools such as journaling and breathing exercises. Additionally, he prescribed medication for me to use as needed during overwhelming moments or anxiety attacks.”
My journey to mental health began approximately four years ago when I started experiencing anxiety. While I had been coping with it on my own for some time, I found my symptoms worsening to the point where I struggled to maintain composure in public, constantly worrying about others' perceptions of me and my struggles.
Fortunately, I had a strong support system, with my mom being my greatest advocate. Encouraged by her, I took the first step by visiting my family doctor. Despite the doctor's attempt to help by prescribing an anti-anxiety medication, I found the side effects unbearable.
With the support of my personal network, I returned to my doctor to explore alternative treatment options. Subsequently, my doctor referred me to a mental health specialist, albeit with a significant wait time. While frustrating, I understood the challenges faced by others in more dire situations.
The specialist proved instrumental in my journey. Understanding my concerns about medication, he provided me with coping tools such as journaling and breathing exercises. Additionally, he prescribed medication for me to use as needed during overwhelming moments or anxiety attacks. These solutions were far more effective for me, empowering me to manage my anxiety without relying solely on daily medication.
Currently, my mental health has significantly improved. I continue to utilize journaling, breathing exercises, and medication as necessary, with annual check-ins with my psychiatrist to ensure my well-being.
I believe that the first step toward accessing mental health support is consulting with one's family doctor. However, I recognize that this may pose a barrier for many Canadians who lack access to primary care. Moreover, I emphasize the persisting stigma surrounding mental health, acknowledging the reluctance of individuals to seek support due to societal pressures, a sentiment I myself once shared.
