Mental Health of Younger Canadians (18-34) during COVID-19

Key findings:

  • In analyzing levels of self-rated anxiety, we have found that 34% of Canadians in this age group had indicated high levels of anxiety (8-10) as of April 2021. This is a significant increase from the 9% of Canadians in this age range (18-34) who reported high self-rated levels of anxiety pre-COVID-19, and compared to the national sample (24%).

  • There is a slight increase in younger Canadians indicating a diagnosis of depression (26%), compared to last year (21%).

  • Younger Canadians were reporting and increase in consumption of alcohol (33%), and cannabis (39%) compared to those at the onset of the pandemic (36% alcohol and 36% cannabis).
